Kalani Organica Coffees & Teas

Looking for the labels

Consumers must know their relationship to the product

Kalani Organica

only sells certified organic coffees and teas and was founded on the premise that farmers that practice organic agriculture deserve a fair price for protecting the environment. We want to make sure that consumers understand what they are looking for in the current labeling structure and why.

Certified Organic

Coffee labeling guarantees that an independent and recognized certifying body has monitored and approved that the coffee is grown, processed, handled and marketed without chemo-synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or pharmaceuticals. Kalani's coffees are certified through agents such as OCIA, EKO, SKAL, QAI, and the Biodynamic Institute and exceed the regulations established by the USDA

Shade Grown Coffee

Shade grown coffee refers to coffee grown in a traditional way with interspersed trees creating a more forest overstory and mimicking a more complex forest ecosystem. The canopy of trees and support effective nutrient cycling for the coffee trees and serve as habitat for migratory birds and other flora and fauna that call these agroforest farms home.

Certified Fair Trade

labeling guarantees that your coffee was grown responsibly and those farmers who grew the beans received a fair price for them. Fair Trade labeling though does not guarantee that the coffee is organic. Fair Trade pays farmers a decent wage, promotes direct trade, provides credit and promotes sustainable practices. Only those farmers who cannot negotiate their own prices and conditions are eligible for such labeling and Kalani allies with Transfair for Fair Trade labeling in these cases. Farmers in some areas from which Kalani purchases its certified organic coffee beans are not considered eligible. Hawaii is one example. Kalani, no matter where the farmer is located, insures that the equitable pay is received for the product.
